How do energy brokers mis-sell contracts?
When done correctly (and legally), a broker should be scouting the market to find you a competitive price with an energy supplier, helping you structure a cost-effective contract for the length that you require.
Brokers often make their money by adding a percentage to your existing rates. Due to this, a portion (usually starting at 0.05p per kWh) of your business energy contract goes to the person who negotiated the deal. Commission will vary between brokers, but providing the percentage is disclosed to you, all remains above board.
Many brokers, however, choose not to disclose the actual amount they make on commission in order to make their contracts seem more appealing (as many businesses would choose another way to source energy if they knew) – or hide this number within energy price increases.
No matter the phrasing, if you haven’t been told how much commission your energy broker made on your contract, they could have mis-sold you a deal.
Although the amount may vary from broker to broker – and brokers are businesses with their own interests – if money is being made on your business, you have a right to know the exact amount.
