Think you've been mis-sold to?
An energy broker might have added an undisclosed commission to your bill if you have recently made a switch with their help – or if you regularly use them for your energy needs.
By law, business energy brokers should let you know exactly how much they are making on your contract, often working with energy suppliers to structure longer-term contracts in a bid to make more commission.
Profiteering in this way is classed as deliberately mis-selling energy. So if you’ve used a broker to source your business’ energy, you could be in with a claim.
A problem that is quickly growing, there are currently thousands of businesses in the UK that have been mis-sold electricity and power from a broker. It’s not all bad news, however, as finding out if you qualify is simple.
Here at Business Energy Claimline, we’ve assisted business owners up and down the country to reclaim money that’s rightfully theirs.
By using legal expertise and insights to navigate this little-known issue, we’ve created a simple and straightforward process that does all the hard work on behalf of our clients.

Find out moreDo businesses pay more for electricity?
Typically, non-domestic consumers such as businesses and enterprise have a lot more to power and heat, including offices, workspaces, multiple retail locations, and headquarters. As a result, enterprises do spend more on their electricity and gas.
So when it comes to monthly energy use – and trying to tackle rising energy prices – businesses need to be savvy.
This is one of the main reasons people turn to a broker, who should be sourcing the best deal for you and your business. Unfortunately, your best interest is not always theirs, which leads to mis-sold energy contracts and brokers making plenty of commission that you weren’t aware of at the point of sale.
As a result, we often have the most success when it comes to building cases for businesses that use a great deal of energy.
For example, we’ve supported those working across sectors such as:
- Health and Wellbeing
- Finance
- Manufacturing and Production
- Retail
- Education
- And many more…

Learn moreHow do energy brokers mis-sell contracts?
When done correctly (and legally), a broker should be scouting the market to find you a competitive price with an energy supplier, helping you structure a cost-effective contract for the length that you require.
Brokers often make their money by adding a percentage to your existing rates. Due to this, a portion (usually starting at 0.05p per kWh) of your business energy contract goes to the person who negotiated the deal. Commission will vary between brokers, but providing the percentage is disclosed to you, all remains above board.
Many brokers, however, choose not to disclose the actual amount they make on commission in order to make their contracts seem more appealing (as many businesses would choose another way to source energy if they knew) – or hide this number within energy price increases.
No matter the phrasing, if you haven’t been told how much commission your energy broker made on your contract, they could have mis-sold you a deal.
Although the amount may vary from broker to broker – and brokers are businesses with their own interests – if money is being made on your business, you have a right to know the exact amount.
Despite this non-disclosure being illegal, the energy brokerage industry is incredibly unregulated. This makes it difficult for disciplinary bodies to take action, especially when this issue is not as prevalent within the consumer market.
However, this does mean that our team could claim larger rebates on behalf of your business.
